The Application Process

Application Process

If you're considering applying for homeownership or home repairs, read through this information on the process before beginning your application.  Habitat is a long-term homeownership program and does not provide emergency housing.

  • Application: Stop into the office to pick up an application or print now (links below).  Our Family Selection Committee will review your application and contact you if they need any additional information.
  • Family Visit or Site Visit:  If you are income eligible, a member of our Family Selection Committee will interview the family in your current home.  Repairs applicants will get a home visit from the Construction Manager to assess the work to complete.
  • If approved:

  • Build Schedule:  After your application is approved, we will work out a schedule for the work to be completed and begin scheduling volunteer groups.
  • Sweat Equity and Partnership:  For New Home Construction, each adult member of the family is responsible for contributing 200 sweat equity hours (hands on construction experience) before finishing the homeownership process.  Partner Families must also complete two courses (Home Stretch and Family Assets for Independence in Minnesota).  For repairs, we will assign a number of sweat equity hours based upon the size of the project.
  • Repayment:  Habitat homeowners pay for their home with a no-profit mortgage.  Repairs repayments will be determined based upon the size and scope of the project.
  • Approval:  After this information is collected, you will be informed if your application has been accepted by the Board of Directors or not accepted.
